Anh Vu

…is a cinematographer based out of Brooklyn. He spent the first ten years of his life in Hanoi, Vietnam before coming to Washington, DC with his family. Having lived in two vastly different cultures growing up, he understood the importance and value of differing perspectives.

At the University of Pittsburgh, Vu discovered filmmaking and the role of Director of Photography and fell in love with the craft. Being a cinematographer allowed him to be thinking both artistically as well as technically. On top of that, coming from his theater background in grade school, the position allowed him to be close to the actions and emotions that are bursting out of the talents. It was also a collaborative craft, which makes Vu very happy as working with the director and feeding off their passion for the story they want to tell is the fuel he needs to get through any projects.

Soon after graduating, Vu made his move to New York to pursue film in a larger market. Thus began a very nomadic chapter in Vu's life - he lived out of his car to remain mobile while taking on various roles around New York in order to be closer to more experienced cinematographers. It paid off, as Vu was able to jump on various projects because of his flexible lifestyle. He improved his camera knowledge as assistant camera, as well as his eye for lighting whenever he would jump on the electric department.

With DP as an end goal, Vu always kept an eye out, and in 2019 an opportunity from Pittsburgh came knocking. This was the short Thanks to Her that had received over 1.6 million views after it was released on YouTube. It inspired the producing team to launch a Kickstarter campaign in 2021 that ultimately was successful and allowed Vu the opportunity to take on an indie feature that summer. After principle photography for Thanks to Her was done, Vu headed back to New York to resume other DP and gaffing projects.
